Ministry ideas for churches
People in need facing the challenges of pregnancy, or dealing with the consequences of the sin of abortion need help. As Christians we want to be there to provide that help as the loving neighbors Christ commanded us to be. Every individual man, woman, and child is a unique person created in God's image. As such each person will have unique needs, spiritually and physically. Many of the specific needs will present themselves while ministering to general needs most people face. We as The Church of Jesus Christ should be the ones meeting those needs we can by His grace. We should not try to shuffle people off to para church ministries(pregnancy centers, outside counselling, etc.) we have little or even no knowledge of. If someone comes to us, we as members of the Body of Christ should minister to those needs and help seek support elsewhere only if needed. We should do all we can to minister to those key spiritual and physical needs from within our local churches first. Here are some areas of general ministry and ideas local churches can consider.
Spiritual Needs
First and foremost people need their spiritual needs addressed. If someone comes to a church seekng help for pregnancy, adoption, food, money, post abortive counsel, etc. they first need to know that Christians seek guidance, strength and provision from God in and through His Church, founded on the Word of God, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. We are the Body of Christ and as individuals and members of local bodies we work to love and glorify God and love our neighbors as ourselves by His means. That means we should spend some time hearing the individual, couple, or even family's story. After learning a bit about them we should pray with and/or for them for wisdom and grace for how we as the Church should move forward with and for them. Everyone we meet with should receive an appropriate presentation of God's law and gospel so that they can know where they stand in light of God's word and learn the way to be saved from sin, death, and hell, through humility, repentance, and faith in Christ alone. Above all else the glory of God must be our main concern. When His law and gospel are presented in love, for His glory, and the hearer's good, He will be glorified. By His grace saved souls and babies may be result. Folks who are ministered to should know they are welcome at our churches and that we want to care for them as a whole person and that they are not just a stat for us to mark down. We are commissioned to disciple the nations and that takes place in and through the Church. Some specific ideas for ministering to folks spiritual needs are bible studies/support groups for pregnant mothers and/or for post abortive mothers, fathers, and families. We should also be introducing or providing contact info for folks in your church who desire to counsel and disciple people in these areas. Churches are found in in all different sizes and in different areas. Those factors of course will guide in determining what counsel and discipleship they can provide. But this is Great Commission work and we're all called to do it. So God will provide for us to do so in some way, no matter our size or location.
Physical Needs
This area of ministry may very widely from church to church. From pregnancy tests to diapers to rent money to adoption help and more, physical needs can range widely and the cost can vary from little to huge! So, local churches should consider how to best meet those needs. First off someone or some small group should be the organizer and contact for this area of ministry. A good idea is to set up an account or fund to help support the needs that will arise. Some inexpensive supplies that could be easily kept on hand at almost any church would be things like pregnancy tests, gift certificates, diapers, etc. As folks are receiving counsel from those providing for their spiritual needs the physical needs will often begin to present themselves. Often those helping spiritually are going to be the natural conduits God uses to help minister to people's physical needs. According to church size and resources, decisions can be made on what and how much the church has available to help out in meeting those needs. Another good idea is for local churches to find out if there are people within the church who would be willing to adopt a baby for a woman in need. Those people should be invited to take part in any area of help they can. Some may get heavily involved in all areas of the ministry. Others may be simply there as a contact should an adoption be needed. As with adoption, those willing and able to foster children should also be known to those in the ministry. There are so many needs that come up local churches and their members should prepare to meet them as best as possible for when they do. Fundraisers and donations of resources and money as the Lord leads are important aspects of this ministry.
Final Thoughts
We must keep in our hearts and minds just how devastating and far reaching the abortion holocaust has gone in our nation. Look at this statistic by the Planned Parenthood founded Guttmacher Institute: "At 2014 abortion rates, one in 20 women (5%) will have an abortion by age 20, about one in five (19%) by age 30 and about one in four (24%) by age 45." In short young girls, women and men of all ages both inside and outside our churches are affected by abortion. We must not look at ministry like this as only for those people "out there". Undoubtedly there are people within our churches struggling with this issue from all stages. When local churches makes this a priority to address in a Christlike way, our people from within will be encouraged to come forward for the help they need. Think of the scared young teen girl whose church rarely if ever talks about abortion. She may think the only resource available to her is some strangers at a local pregnancy center. Or what about the young family who are pregnant and didn't expect it or think they can't handle it? What about the teen guy who got his girlfriend pregnant and doesn't know what to do? When your local church is known as a place that ministers in love to all the areas associated with abortion, people from within and without will come forward for help to the glory of God and the good of His people. Please friends, prayerfully endeavor to get your church involved in ministering in this area now. God bless!
